                         ('Nationwide' or 'the Company')

                              Purchase of own shares

On 25 January 2008, the Company purchased 450,000 of its own ordinary shares of
12.5 pence each ('Shares') at a price of 115p per share. The Shares acquired are
to be cancelled.

This purchase was made under the authority approved by shareholders at the
Company's AGM in May 2007 to make market purchases of up to 10 per cent. of the
Company's issued ordinary share capital at a price no more than 105 per cent. 
of the average mid market price for the 5 business days preceding the purchase.

The number of Shares with voting rights in issue following this transaction is
43,197,220. Therefore the total number of voting rights in the Company is
43,197,220 which number may be used by shareholders as the denominator for the
calculations by which they will determine if they are required to notify their
interest in, or a change in their interest in, the Company under the FSA's
Disclosure and Transparency Rules.
