QoS DSL - Extending Convergence to the SME and Remote Worker
- Provides a catalyst for the roll-out of NetServices voice over IP
applications-
NetServices plc (AIM:NSV) the specialist provider of converged business
communications is pleased to announce today that it has launched a new range of
services based on QoS IPStream technologies. The service opens up converged
networking to the SMEs and enables voice and data services to be converged for
the homeworker.
Quality of Service (QoS) is the ability to set priorities on traffic across the
network and has been deliverable on networks based on MPLS and Leased Line
technologies for some time but not on more cost-effective technologies such as
DSL. Since the advent of voice over IP the ability to set priorities on DSL has
become one of the holy grails of networking. To date some providers have
developed partial solutions including making QoS available on the DataStream
network or providing a limited upstream service. The ability to prioritise
traffic, both up and downstream has until now evaded providers.
NetServices is the only service provider in the UK to be able to provide QoS in
both up and downstream direction on all DSL technologies. This capability allows
the cost-effective extension of a corporate network to the smallest of
operations and makes corporate-type solutions available to smaller operations
and remote workers.
DSL has have been widely adopted by businesses and is ideal for data
applications such as email and web access but until now it was unable to support
voice and guarantee the quality of voice services. The ability to prioritise the
traffic ensures that voice call quality is not dependant on the amount of
traffic being generated by other applications using the same connection - in
other words it provides Business Voice Quality (BVQ) service.
Mark Vickers NetServices CEO says: "This is a key development for NetServices
that will act as a catalyst for roll-out of our voice over IP and unified
communication applications as it facilitates a cost-effective access technology
without sacrificing service excellence."
