New Android Internet Set -top-box product ready for customer
testing and to be launched in September 2011
PeerTV PLC (AIM: PTV), a provider of technology solutions for
the OTT (TV over the internet) market, is pleased to announce the
immediate availability of evaluation samples of its Android-based
Internet TV Set-top-Box, ES-550. The new product, under development
for over a year is now entering its customer testing phase and is
expected to be formally released during the IBC exhibition in
Amsterdam in September 2011.
The ES-550 offers a service-operator grade solution that
combines the benefits of the latest features expected by customers
in OTT Set-top-Boxes with the power and flexibility of the Android
operating system. Remote upgrading and maintenance, content
protection and validation and the ability to transform the standard
Android user experience into a TV-optimized experience, are amongst
the features of the PTV ES-550. Based on a SigmaDesign media
processor, the ES-550 brings the quality and maturity of its media
architecture to the Android era, extending and improving formerly
phone-oriented tools and functions that are inadequate for modern,
full-HD service.
The new product comes bundled with a software development kit
and sample application framework for PTV's customers. This will
allow quick and easy adaptations of the applications to the needs
and style of the application developer, without the need to invest
significantly into studying the specifics of the Android media
architecture and its powerful but complex multi-application
environment. With the ES-550, TV applications can be developed and
downloaded as multiple individual apps while integrating them into
a fully cooperative solution at the service provider side.
"Android is expected to become the new standard for Embedded TV
devices", says PeerTV CEO, Ofer Barda, highlighting that the
traditionally fragmented Set-top-Box industry still relies on
proprietary programming interfaces. "Application development time
and cost will be reduced dramatically while user benefits and
satisfaction levels are expected to increase to a new level" says
Chen Landau, PeerTV Sales VP, "all based on the power and
flexibility of the Android operating system".

Note for Editors
PTV listed on AIM on 30 December 2010. The Company develops and
markets proprietary solutions which enable content providers to
deliver specific, live, streamed channels and VOD over the Internet
on a cost effective basis for viewing on TV sets. The Company's
core customers comprise content owners or aggregators looking to
deliver specialised content to customers distributed across the
globe. To date, the Company has been particularly successful in
servicing providers of "narrowcasting" content - that is niche
content with appeal to specific communities of interest. This
market encompasses the delivery of ethnic or national content to
customers outside of their place of origin. The Company's ability
to deliver a cost effective solution for the delivery of such
content while providing the end customer with a content rich and
high quality viewing experience has been central to its ability to
attract business from such content providers.
