                   REPURCHASE OF PREFERENCE SHARES

Following the authority granted by shareholders on 22 May 1998, the company
has today repurchased a further 25,000 9.5% cumulative preference shares of #1
each at a price of #1.80. This represents some 20.95% of the class remaining
following the repurchases effected earlier today and on 22, 27 and 28 May, 1
and 4 June, 26 August and 2 November 1998. Cumulative repurchases to date
amount to 1,456,213 such shares or 93.91% of the class.
