                   REPURCHASE OF PREFERENCE SHARES

Following the authority granted by shareholders on 22 May 1998, the company
has today repurchased a further 30,216 9.5% cumulative preference shares of #1
each at a price of #1.80. This represents some 32.04% of the class remaining
following the two repurchases effected earlier today and those that took place
on 22, 27 and 28 May, 1 and 4 June, 26 August and 2 November 1998. Cumulative
repurchases to date amount to 1,486,249 such shares or 95.86% of the class.
