The private sector in the U.S. lost jobs in January for the first time since December 2020 amid the spike in Covid-19 cases due to the spread of the Omicron variant.

Private payrolls decreased by 301,000 jobs in January, the ADP National Employment Report showed Wednesday, missing the 200,000 gain expected from economists polled by The Wall Street Journal.

The number of private-sector jobs created in December was revised to 776,000 from 807,000 initially estimated.

"The labor market recovery took a step back at the start of 2022 due to the effect of the Omicron variant and its significant, though likely temporary, impact to job growth," said Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP.

Small businesses, with a maximum of 49 employees, were hit hardest with a loss of 144,000 jobs. Large businesses, those of at least 500 workers, lost 98,000 jobs; and jobs in medium-sized businesses, between 50 and 499 employees, receded by 59,000.

By sector, services providers lost 274,000 jobs. "Leisure and hospitality saw the largest setback after substantial gains in fourth quarter 2021," Ms. Richardson said. Jobs in the goods-producing sector were down by 27,000, the data showed.

The report, carried out by the ADP Research Institute along with Moody's Analytics, is based on data through the 12th of the month.

The U.S. Department of Labor is expected to release its employment report for January, which covers the same period as the ADP National Employment Report, on Friday. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal are expecting it to show nonfarm payrolls up by 150,000, and the unemployment rate stabilizing at 3.9%. The ADP series can diverge considerably from the Labor Department's data.
