MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets have rebounded nicely from this time yesterday as 14 of the 15 markets that we track are currently in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the collective stands at a positive 0.771 percent. Both the Bank of England (BOE) and the European Central Bank (ECB) left their key short-term interest rates unchanged. The lack of any move was largely expected. The November unemployment rate in the Euro-Zone held at 8.8 percent. That same rate has been in place since March. The number of unemployed did, however, decline ever so slightly to 12.3 million from 12.4 million in October. As for Europe's largest economy, the December unadjusted jobless rate in Germany rose to 10.4 percent versus the 10.0 percent figure in the prior month. In seasonally adjusted terms, the number of unemployed declined by 21,000, better than expectations for a 10,000 drop. This earnings season officially kicks off today with the Alcoa fourth quarter earnings report scheduled for release after today's market close. The company is expected to show a bottom line figure of 34-cents per share. The spigot does not really get turned wide open for another week, but you should keep your ears open now. As for economic reports, before the market open Initial Jobless Claims report for the week ending January 3 is expected to show a rise of 11,000. This would follow on the heels of the prior week's 15,000 decline and ahead of tomorrow's December non-farms report. The prior week's numbers came in at an annualized 339,000, the lowest figure since January 20, 2001. At 1:00 p.m., Kansas City Federal Reserve President Hoenig addresses the Topeka Rotary Club on monetary policy and the economic outlook in Topeka, Kansas. As the market would still be open, comments could impact both currency and treasury markets. At 3:00 p.m., November Consumer Credit is seen rising $5 billion as the Christmas tab comes due. In October, the consumer financial burden rose by just $900 million. Additionally, key retailers will be reporting their same-store-sales numbers for the all important holiday sales season.
