Key workplace injury rates drop to less than ½
of the industry average
United Water, one of the nation’s leading professional providers
of water and environmental services, significantly outperformed the
largely public water and sewer sector in 2013 safety performance as
compared with data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
In 2013, workplace accidents that resulted in lost time showed a
40 percent decline, which is consistent with a 5-year company trend
in the right direction. In sum, 85 United Water facilities had no
lost time accidents in 2013. Lost time incidents are defined as
workplace related injuries or illnesses resulting in days away from
work.
Moreover, less severe incidents came in at an impressive 43
percent less than the most recently published national average for
state and local governments and 35 percent less than the water and
sewer sector. Measured by the Recordable Incident Rate, this data
includes injuries involving medical treatment and restrictions.
“We demonstrate top performance in the sectors we serve by
bringing any new project or contract up to our own high safety
standards,” Bertrand Camus, CEO of United Water, said. And we
promote a culture that makes it everyone’s responsibility for
employees to return healthy and safely to their families every
night.”
United Water’s 2,250 employees completed a notable amount of
work to post these results, including logging a total of 51,894
health and safety training hours in 2013 averaging 23 hours of
safety training hours per employee. They have set even more
ambitious training goals for 2014. Throughout the year, individual
employees receive recognition for “Doing it Right.”
Leaders and industry groups have recognized United Water’s
performance as well. In May 2014, New Jersey Governor Christie’s
Administration presented United Water with an Annual Governor’s
Occupational Safety and Health Award in recognition of the
company’s safety achievements in reducing safety hazards and
preventing accidents.
In 2013, the Wixom, MI wastewater treatment facility operated by
United Water was the recipient of the Michigan Voluntary Protection
Program (MVPP) Star Award for workplace safety and health
excellence from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (MIOSHA).
“These are praiseworthy results for our workforce, especially at
a time when the company is focused in many areas on heavy
construction related to investments in underground pipes and
infrastructure and emergency response activities,” Camus said. “But
when we are talking about people and families, we must continue to
improve, despite difficult working conditions.”
