New Zealand's telecommunications and recording industries have made their first play to crack down on the illegal downloading of music under recently passed legislation, the country's largest telecommunications companies confirmed Tuesday.

Telecom Corp. of New Zealand (TEL.NZ), the New Zealand unit of Vodafone Group PLC (VOD, VOD.LN) and New Zealand government-owned Orcon are looking into concerns raised by the Recording Industry Association about such downloads.

Under legislation introduced Sept. 1, when copyright owners detect an infringement, they can report it to the offender's Internet provider, which will then issue its customer a notice. Each offender could face a fine of up to NZ$15,000 once he or she receives three notices.

The legislation is the first of its kind in New Zealand.

Telecom Corp. spokeswoman Anna Serten said the company had so far received 42 reports of infringement from the Recording Industry Association on behalf of record labels, with the majority of the concerns related to the alleged illegal downloading of three tracks from R&B recording artist Rihanna.
