After Wednesday's Bell Market Commentary

On Wednesday, the markets tumbled on retail sales data. The Commerce Department said retail sales unexpectedly fell in April for the second straight month. Bond prices rose on the negative economic news. The dollar mostly rose against other major currencies. Gold prices also rose. U.S. crude fell 83 cents to settle at $58.02 a barrel, off a six-month peak above $60 hit earlier this week. The Dow fell 184.22, or 2.2 percent, to close at 8,284.89. The Nasdaq composite index fell 51.73, or 3 percent, to close at 1,664.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 24.43, or 2.7 percent, to close at 883.92. The Russell 2000 index fell 23.36, or 4.7 percent, to close at 471.82.
