Leighton Holdings Ltd. (LEI.AU) said Thursday that it will carry out civil engineering and underground work at Chevron Australia's Gorgon natural gas project, in a contract valued at more than A$800 million.

Leighton subsidiary Leighton Contractors said the work on Gorgon, Australia's largest single resources development project, would start immediately with 1,500 people employed at the peak, and be completed by 2013.

The work will include earthworks, concrete work, drainage, piping, and cabling at the LNG plant site on Barrow Island off the northwest coast of Australia.

Gorgon is operated by Chevron Australia, a subsidiary of Chevron Corp. (CVX), and jointly owned by Chevron, Exxon Mobil Corp. (XOM) and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA), alongside small stakes held by Osaka Gas Co. Ltd. (9532.TO), Tokyo Gas Co. Ltd. (9531.TO) and Chubu Electric Power Co. Inc. (9502.TO).
