UnitedHealth Group (UNH) on Friday named Dirk C. McMahon, currently president and chief operating officer of its Optum unit, as chief executive of UnitedHealthcare.

The health-care company also named Daniel J. Schumacher, currently president and chief operating officer of UnitedHealthcare, president and chief operating officer of Optum.

UnitedHealth said Mr. McMahon, who joined the company in 2003, is replacing Steve Nelson, who is retiring from UnitedHealthcare.

Mr. Schumacher joined the company in 1999.
