Siemens AG has won a contract for two converter stations for the Suedlink power-line program between northern and southern Germany, system operators Tennet and TransnetBW said Monday.

The contract volume for both stations is several hundred million euros, the two companies said.

Suedlink is expected to transport electricity produced by wind power in the north of Germany to the south via direct-current lines.

The contract with Siemens relates to the power line between Brunsbuettel in the northern region of Schleswig-Holstein, and Leingarten/Grossgartach in Baden-Wuerttemberg in the south.

The converter stations are needed to convert direct current into alternating current and vice versa. Each of the two DC projects has a transmission capacity of 2,000 megawatts, the companies said.

A separate tender process has been launched for a line between Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria and is expected to be completed by mid-2022, Tennet and TransnetBW said.
