According to today's ADP National Employment Reportďż˝, private sector employment decreased by 522,000 in January. The ADP National Employment Report, created by ADPďż˝ Employer Services, a division of Automatic Data Processing, Inc. (ADP), in partnership with Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, is derived from actual payroll data and measures the change in total nonfarm private employment each month.

According to Joel Prakken, Chairman of Macroeconomic Advisers, LLC, "Nonfarm private employment decreased 522,000 from December 2008 to January 2009 on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the ADP National Employment Report."

Prakken added, "January's ADP Report estimates nonfarm private employment in the service-providing sector fell by 279,000. Employment in the goods-producing sector declined 243,000, the twenty-fourth consecutive monthly decline. Employment in the manufacturing sector declined 160,000, its twenty-eighth decline over the last twenty-nine months."

"Large businesses, defined as those with 500 or more workers, saw employment decline 92,000, while medium-size businesses with between 50 and 499 workers declined 255,000. Employment among small-size businesses, defined as those with fewer than 50 workers, declined 175,000. Sharply falling employment at medium- and small-size businesses clearly indicates that the recession continues to spread well beyond manufacturing and housing-related activities," said Prakken.

Prakken went on to say, "In January, construction employment dropped 83,000. This was its twenty-second consecutive monthly decline, and brings the total decline in construction jobs since the peak in January 2007 to 923,000."

The matched sample used to develop the ADP National Employment Report was derived from ADP data which, during the last six months of 2008, averaged approximately 400,000 payrolls representing nearly 24 million U.S. employees. This approximately represents the size of the matched sample used this month.

Due to the important contribution small businesses make to economic growth, employment data that is specific to businesses with fewer than 50 employees will be reported in the ADP Small Business Reportďż˝ each month. The ADP Small Business Report is a subset of the ADP National Employment Report.

Private employment among small businesses decreased by 175,000 in January, according to the ADP Small Business Report released today. This employment decline clearly indicates that the recession has widened to include businesses of all sizes.
