New NAS Gateway Fuels EMC Network Attached Storage Growth
HOPKINTON, Mass., March 10 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation
announced today that its network attached storage (NAS) business
experienced significant growth during 2003 following the
introduction of the EMC Celerra NS series of midrange NAS products.
According to IDC, EMC claimed the #1 NAS spot in the fourth quarter
and maintained its leadership position for the full-year of
2003(a). EMC's traction continues with new market-leading
performance measurements for the recently announced NS700 NAS
system, published on the SPEC SFS web site (http://www.spec.org/).
David Donatelli, EMC Executive Vice President of Storage Platforms
Operations, said, "EMC has expanded its NAS product line to address
customer and market demands. The performance, functionality, and
improved manageability of our offerings are resonating with
customers. They are choosing to deploy networked storage with
providers who can surpass their expectations on service, support,
flexibility and functionality." The Celerra NS600 NAS system,
introduced in December 2002, and the NS600G gateway, introduced in
October 2003, both contributed to EMC's overall NAS unit growth of
nearly 100% for 2003. Strong customer demand forgateway NAS systems
that integrate with EMC SAN environments drove quarterly unit
growth of the NS600G to over 200% during the fourth quarter of 2003
compared to Q303. This momentum demonstrates that customers are
looking to EMC for their complete networked storage infrastructure
and information management requirements. Hubbard One develops
software products and provides business solutions to almost 40
percent of the largest law firms in America. Hubbard One's Director
of Technology, William Hansmann, noted, "We began evaluating
network-attached storage technologies to improve storage
management, increase capacity and maximize our existing SAN
environment for our clients' benefit. There are a variety of NAS
products on the market, but these are typically point products that
do not have the flexibility, scalability and availability necessary
to meet our rapidly growing business needs. We are confident that
EMC's NS600G NAS gateway provides the infrastructure necessary to
pool our existing storage infrastructure and drive utilization."
EMC's NAS software simultaneously experienced rapid customer
adoption throughout 2003. EMC Celerra Manager enables customers to
configure, administer, monitor and more easily manage their NAS
environments from a simple, web-based interface eliminating the
need for a dedicated management workstation. EMC's NAS products
address customer problems across the spectrum of NAS requirements,
delivering industry leading price, performance, and ease-of-
management. In addition to the NS series mid-tier NAS, EMC offers
the Celerra CNS to address high-end applications that require very
high performance and scalability. For the low end and the Windows
market, EMC provides the EMC NetWin 200, which was recently added
to the Microsoft Windows Server Catalog. Increasing demand around
the globe, especially in North America and EMEA, and several key
trends are contributing to EMC's NAS growth. Gateways are the
fastest growing segment of the NAS market. EMC's Celerra CNS,
NS600G and the newly announced NS700G are experiencing rapid growth
as customers discover that NAS gateways combine with SANs to offer
comprehensive networked storage solutions. These combined NAS/SAN
environments deliver more value to customers by pooling storage to
provide better utilization, flexibility, scalability, and
investment protection. EMC is also announcing that SPECsfs
performance data for the newly announced NS700 integrated and
gateway models has been posted to the SPEC web site. The newly
published data underscores EMC's clear performance and
price/performance leadership over Network Appliance. The new NS700
Series, delivering top performance of 71,482 SPECsfs97_R1.v3 ops
per second with an overall response time of 2.54 ms, outperforms
the entire line of Network Appliance filers. Additionally, the
NS700 is priced 42% less than the estimated list price for the
FAS980, and delivers superior performance. Additionally the NS700
delivers: * Over 40% more throughput performance than the NS600 *
55% better price/performance than the Network Appliance FAS940 *
48% better price/performance than the Network Appliance FAS960 *
42% better price/performance than the Network Appliance FAS980
Howard Goldberg, President of SKYDATA Corporation, a leading
provider of mass storage and memory solutions based in Mississauga,
Ontario, Canada, said, "We offer customers the highest quality
products and unparalleled service and support to meet their unique
business needs. Our customers are rapidly embracing EMC's NS700G
NAS gateway because it enables them to quickly, easily and
affordably deploy NAS and leverage their SAN investments delivering
consolidation, driving higher performance and providing greater
data protection." About EMC EMC Corporation is the world leader in
