Gulf Region to Receive Donation CHARLOTTE, N.C., Nov. 17
/PRNewswire/ -- Horizon Lines presented a check for over $50,000 to
the American Red Cross for the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief
Fund. The funds were gathered through employee donations and a
company matching program. The American Red Cross provides shelter,
food, and health services to individuals and families affected by
disaster which enables them to resume their normal daily activities
independently. Chuck Raymond, Chairman, President and CEO for
Horizon Lines, LLC presented the company's donation to Pamela
Daigle, who is the CEO of the American Red Cross, Greater Carolinas
Chapter in Charlotte, NC. "Hurricane Katrina was one of the biggest
national disasters in our country's history and the devastation and
losses in New Orleans and surrounding areas are incomprehensible"
stated Raymond. "There are so many ways for people to get involved
and help in this situation. Horizon Lines and its associates
stepped up to donate to the American Red Cross because the
organization has successfully demonstrated the ability to assist
people in natural disasters such as this." "Helping more than 1.5
million people affected by Hurricane Katrina, the American Red
Cross has served meals and snacks, provided emergency financial
assistance, housing and mental health counseling," said Pamela
Daigle, Chief Executive Officer, Greater Carolinas Chapter,
American Red Cross. "Due to the financial generosity of Horizon
Lines, the American Red Cross is able to continue providing
immediate emergency disaster relief to those devastated and
virtually left homeless as a result of this natural disaster."
Horizon Lines has served the U.S. Gulf Coast communities for over
forty years and performs direct vessel calls on the ports of
Houston and New Orleans. On September 28th, the ocean container
vessel, Horizon Crusader delivered to Houston free of charge
thirteen 40 foot containers of donated relief supplies collected by
the Municipality of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Initially collected as
relief supplies for Hurricane Katrina refugees relocated to
Houston, the supplies arrived just as Hurricane Rita came ashore in
Texas and western Louisiana and were of immediate use. In addition,
the company has been working with affected trucking companies in
Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama to help them get back on their
feet. These operations are critical to the businesses, employees
and citizens of the Gulf Region. The entire United States has felt
the impact of disrupted supply lines and logistics challenges.
