San Jose, Calif., Tops Inaugural List; Three New Jersey Metro Areas
in Top 10 ST. LOUIS, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's biggest
cities aren't necessarily home to the best savers, according to the
new "A.G. Edwards Nest Egg Index," which ranks America's 200
top-performing communities and the 50 states based on residents'
personal savings and investing behavior. The Nest Egg Index also
shows that people in the eastern United States generally are doing
a better job of building personal savings than their counterparts
west of the Mississippi. Southern locales trail their northern
neighbors by a wide margin. Among the communities reviewed, San
Jose in California's Silicon Valley earned the top spot on the
inaugural Nest Egg Index, barely edging out the Nassau-Suffolk
counties on New York's Long Island, which ranked No. 2. A.G.
Edwards (NYSE:AGE), one of the nation's leading financial services
providers, has created its Nest Egg Index as an annual barometer to
track Americans' savings and investing habits. By measuring a dozen
statistical factors -- including participation in retirement
savings plans, personal debt levels and home ownership -- the Nest
Egg Index shows the geographic regions where people are succeeding
and where they face the greatest difficulty in building and
nurturing their nest eggs. "With the U.S. Department of Commerce
reporting a negative national personal savings rate in October --
its lowest level in decades -- it's apparent that many Americans
are not setting aside enough personal savings," said Robert L.
Bagby, chairman and chief executive officer of A.G. Edwards. "As
millions of baby boomers enter their retirement years, this
situation -- if left unchanged -- will have a profound impact on
the economic well-being of millions of Americans. We want our Nest
Egg Index to draw attention to this important issue and remind
people that regardless of where they live, there are some simple
steps that they can take to create a foundation for a more secure
financial future." The other communities in the top 10 of the A.G.
Edwards Nest Egg Index were Middlesex-Somerset-Hunterdon, N.J.
(125.67); San Francisco (122.13); Bergen-Passaic, N.J. (119.81);
Minneapolis-St. Paul (119.59); Monmouth-Ocean, N.J. (118.62);
Barnstable-Yarmouth, Mass., in the Cape Cod area (117.33); Ann
Arbor, Mich. (116.76); and Rochester, Minn. (116.69). In
comparison, Nest Egg Index leader San Jose recorded a reading of
128.37 and No. 2 Nassau-Suffolk a 128.17. (Results are indexed to a
national average score of 100.) Bigger Cities Lag Although Long
Island and three New Jersey markets in the New York metro area
ranked among the leaders of the Nest Egg Index, New York City
itself did not crack the top 200, nor did major cities such as Los
Angeles, Miami and San Antonio. "A number of factors influence how
well people are doing at building their nest eggs," said A.G.
Edwards Financial Planning Specialist Sophie Beckmann, CFP(R), CPA.
"There are external forces involved, such as economic trends and
cost of living. But other factors, such as starting early,
participating in a retirement plan at work and keeping personal
debt low, are based on personal choices that help foster financial
security for individuals and families, regardless of where they
live." Joining Ann Arbor, Rochester and Barnstable-Yarmouth --
cities each with a population of less than 200,000 -- other smaller
markets among the top 30 communities were Boulder-Longmont, Colo.;
Dutchess County, N.Y., in the Hudson River Valley; Lancaster, Pa.,
in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country; and the Wisconsin
markets of Appleton-Oshkosh-Neenah, Racine, Sheboygan and Wausau.
In fact, six Wisconsin communities placed among the top 50 on the
Nest Egg Index. "There may be a perception that economic and
savings opportunities are more limited in smaller cities," Beckmann
said. "But in many of the small markets that scored well on the
Nest Egg Index, unemployment is lower than the national average,
and participation in savings plans such as 401(k)s is relatively
high." Among the states, New Jersey ranked No. 1 with a Nest Egg
Index reading of 114.35, followed by Connecticut (113.98),
Minnesota (113.70), New Hampshire (112.19) and Massachusetts
(111.77). California, Florida and Pennsylvania tied for the states
with the most communities making the top 200 list at 13, with New
York and Wisconsin (12), Ohio (11), and Indiana (10) also posting
double digits. About A.G. Edwards & Sons, Inc. Drawn to the

Breakdown of the A.G. Edwards Nest Egg Index In its inaugural Nest
Egg Index, A.G. Edwards noted a number of fun facts and interesting
trends, including: -- East vs. West. The heavily populated, older
Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions dominated the state-by-state
rankings, taking nine of the top 20 spots, compared with seven for
states west of the Mississippi. The only top 10 states from west of
the Mississippi River were No. 3 Minnesota (113.70) and No. 10
Colorado (106.41). -- North vs. South. North Carolina, with a 97.91
Nest Egg Index reading, was the highest-ranking state in the
southeastern United States -- an area encompassing those states
east of the Mississippi and south of the Virginias. That means the
entire region scored below the national average. Among Northeastern
states, only New York at 95.53 ranked lower than North Carolina,
with all of the other states in that region achieving an index
score of 99.71 or better. -- Big Business May Not Mean Big Savings.
While many of the nation's biggest corporations are based in highly
ranked Nest Egg Index communities, their presence did not
necessarily correlate to a strong state ranking. California, Texas
and New York -- the three states that are home to the most Fortune
1000 companies -- trailed Alaska, Wyoming and Vermont -- states
with no Fortune 1000 headquarters -- in the overall Nest Egg Index
rankings. -- Taxation vs. Nest Egg Index Representation. Although
taxes can directly affect savings and investment behavior, states
with relatively higher per capita tax burdens did not necessarily
do poorly in the Nest Egg Index rankings. Two of the top three Nest
Egg states, Connecticut and Minnesota, were among the top four
states in terms of total tax per capita in 2004, according to the
U.S. Census Bureau. -- It's Gotta Be the Cheese. The children in
mythical Lake Wobegon, Minn., may all be above average, but they've
got nothing on savers in Wisconsin. The Badger state had six
communities among the top 50 Nest Egg Index markets, with
Janesville-Beloit, Kenosha and Milwaukee- Waukesha just missing the
top 50 with Index rankings of 53, 54 and 64, respectively. Even the
lowest-ranked Wisconsin community, the Superior-Duluth market, was
above average at 100.53. -- Regional Rivalries. Inter-city
rivalries that get played out for bragging rights in a number of
categories -- business, government and sports -- highlighted some
close contests in savings behavior. San Francisco's 122.13 beat
Oakland's 114.72; Chicago edged football rival Green Bay, Wis.,
108.98 to 108.70; Dallas at 98.81 outranked Houston at 95.73;
Cincinnati topped Cleveland, 104.22 versus 103.89; and Kansas
City's 107.82 squeaked by St. Louis at 107.70. A.G. Edwards Nest
