Byron Station Declares, Terminates Unusual Event

Smoke Inside Room Prompts Declaration WARRENVILLE, Ill., Feb. 24
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Operators at Byron Station declared an
Unusual Event at 8:54 a.m. CST today after smoke was found in a
room inside of the protected area of the plant. The Unusual Event
was terminated at 11:09 a.m. The smoke came from electrical
equipment inside of the room. The smoke ceased once electricity to
the equipment was cut off. Appropriate local, state and federal
agencies were notified. The Byron Fire Department was called to the
station as a contingency when the smoke was discovered. There were
no injuries or release of radiation, and no damage to safety-
related equipment. An Unusual Event is the lowest of the four
emergency classifications as defined by the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission. Byron Station is located in Ogle County, Ill., about 25
