Kurtz: Legislation Needed to Protect Sensitive Personal Data ARLINGTON, Va., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cyber Security Industry Alliance (CSIA) today praised President Bush's signing of an executive order to increase law enforcement efforts against identity theft, warn consumers of its dangers and better protect personal data held by the federal government, but urged further congressional action on "information security fundamentals." "This executive order is definitely a step in the right direction, but what we really need is for Congress to pass legislation that requires reasonable measures to protect sensitive consumer data in the first place. The legislation should also encourage the use of best practices like encryption, and standardizes requirements for notification when breaches occur," Kurtz said. "President Bush has the opportunity to demonstrate some real leadership here by pushing members of Congress to resolve their differences and get a bill to his desk." Such legislation would provide a foundation for the President's task force to tackle the problem more effectively, Kurtz added. Likewise, legislation reviewed in a hearing today in the House Judiciary Committee is a positive development, Kurtz said. "However, much of the bill is focused on law enforcement and penalties. Certainly, as a society we need to recognize that cybercrime is a growing concern. But the most effective way to fight the problem is to help prevent it in the first place."
