PR Newswire (US)
New for this year, the AVP Crocs Tour will feature the "Crocs
Slam," "Crocs Cup Shootout presented by Bud Light" and "$1 Million
Crocs Cup Championship" as parts of the 17-stop race for the Crocs
Cup LOS ANGELES, April 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- With more
parity than ever, an immensely deep talent pool and the best beach
volleyball players in the world, every weekend on the AVP Crocs
Tour features a dramatic, high-energy beach volleyball event.
However, by adding three new series this year, Crocs will
undoubtedly make action on the 25th anniversary of the AVP more
dramatic than the previous 24. AVP, Inc. (OTC:AVPI) (BULLETIN
BOARD: AVPI) (http://www.avp.com/), a lifestyle sports
entertainment company focused on professional beach volleyball, and
Crocs (NASDAQ:CROX), have announced three new series to run
throughout the 2008 season: the Crocs Slam, Crocs Cup Shootout and
the unprecedented $1 Million Crocs Cup Championship. "The new Crocs
Cup Shootout and Crocs Cup $1 Million Championship at the Manhattan
Beach Open will raise the stakes for the Crocs Cup in all respects
-- it will become our version of "march madness" said Leonard
Armato, the CEO and commissioner of the AVP. "The Crocs Cup
Shootout will be comprised of a series of events immediately
following the Olympic Games that will focus people on our AVP stars
and their four-week quest to secure 1) the coveted Crocs Cup; 2)
the Manhattan Beach Open title - which is the oldest and most
prestigious event in beach volleyball and 3) the biggest payday in
beach volleyball history." From the beginning of the season through
the eighth event in Belmar, N.J. (June 20-22), teams will earn
single Crocs Cup points, similar to most of 2007. Then, the new
series starts with the Crocs Slam, which is a run of five events
from Boulder, Colo. (July 4-6) to San Diego (Aug. 1-3), which is
the last event before the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.
These five events, four of which will be televised on NBC, will
feature double Crocs Cup points and raised purses, both increases
that will undoubtedly light a fire under players looking to contend
for a piece of the Cup. After San Diego, the top 24 teams that were
able to either capitalize early in the season or make a push during
the Crocs Slam will earn a place in the first ever Crocs Cup
Shootout presented by Bud Light, a four-event shootout similar to
the PGA TOUR's FedExCup culminating with an unprecedented $1
million purse to the winning team. The first Shootout event will
take place in Cincinnati (Aug. 29-31) with the top 16 teams moving
on to Santa Barbara, Calif. (Sept. 6-7) the following week. From
Santa Barbara, 12 teams move on to San Francisco (Sept. 12-14).
Then, from there, only the top eight teams move on to the heralded
$1 million Crocs Cup Championship in Manhattan Beach, Calif., the
perfect place to crown the Crocs Cup champion. Those top eight
teams face the last eight standing from the world's largest
qualifier, which will be conducted on the Thursday prior to the
tournament and will be open to AVP Crocs Tour teams who were
eliminated from the Shootout, qualifier-level players, amateurs,
etc. -- any team that signs up for a shot at history. It then
becomes a single-elimination sprint for the $1 million purse, which
is the largest ever offered in the sport of beach volleyball. "This
formula was created to help bring the drama to a crescendo as the
race for the Crocs Cup nears a close," said Ron Snyder, CEO of
Crocs, Inc. "This has worked beautifully on the NASCAR Sprint Cup
Series, the PGA TOUR and the LPGA, and we know with the raw product
we already have in place, it will work beautifully for our
remarkable athletes and the world-class volleyball they play." The
Crocs Cup, a one-of-a-kind trophy designed exclusively for the AVP
Crocs Tour by Tiffany and Co., was won in 2006 by Mike Lambert and
Stein Metzger and by Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers last year. The
outstanding women's team of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh has
had a firm grip on the award both years. About AVP, Inc. AVP, Inc.
