Diagnosticos da America (DA) of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is now the fifth largest player in the global medical diagnostics industry. Starting as a clinical laboratory, the company has also expanded into medical imaging. Here is how the company describes itself on its web site (link here): Diagnósticos da América is the largest company engaged in diagnostic medicine in Latin America ....Structured around 148 units and three Technical-Operational Centers, we serve 15 thousand clients and process approximately 80 thousand clinical analysis tests per day, with accuracy, safety and promptness. We employ 4,100 people, including physicians, biochemists, biomedical professionals, nurses, engineers, architects and business managers. Our medical staff comprises 500 specialists, many of whom with a doctorate or post-doctorate degree from Brazilian and foreign universities.DA manages 23 mega-PSCs in Brazil, each of which is 15,000 sq. ft. or more. A PSC is a patient service center which, at least in the U.S., is a blood drawing center that supports a clinical reference laboratory. However, DA is blending laboratory services with medical imaging to create these mega-PSCs. In previous notes, I have discussed Sonic Health Care and its purchase of CPL (links here and here). Sonic is also a global player in the medical diagnostics industry, combining clinical lab services with medical imaging. In this PowerPoint lecture, I discuss some of the advantages that I believe would result from the integration of radiology and pathology to form a combined department of diagnostic medicine. It's interesting that such an integration is already occurring on a global basis and pioneered by companies such as DA. As noted here previously, the multinational company Siemens is also pursuing a similar vision by purchasing the in-vitro diagnostic companies DPL and Bayer Diagnostics in order to enhance its preestablished global position in in-vivo imaging.http://carteiradeinvestimento.wordpress.com/
