Is The Macy’s Parade Going To Cancel Due To Rain?

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is set to continue rain or shine, as it has done for decades, despite wet weather forecasted for New York City.

Organizers prep for a variety of weather conditions, but there are some changes that happen if the weather isn’t ideal.

Rain isn’t enough to call off the parade. The floats and performers make adjustments to handle wet conditions, but marching bands and dancers might switch up their routines if it’s too wet or slippery.

Rain doesn’t automatically ground the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, either.

Wind, though, can keep the famed character balloons from flying. If sustained winds top 23 mph or gusts hit 35 mph, New York City regulations require the balloons don’t fly.

The current forecast doesn’t call for high winds on Thanksgiving, so the balloons will likely still be on display. Since 1997, when the wind regulations were put in place following a few dangerous incidents, the balloons have never been grounded for high winds.

And yet, if history is any guide, the parade will draw more viewers than the Oscars, the Yankees-Dodgers World Series or the most popular New Year’s Eve telecast.

Though it has been an annual staple in American living rooms and kitchens since the 1950s, the parade became the most-watched entertainment show in the United States only over the past three years.

Other than some sporting events or marquee N.F.L. games — which can draw more than 30 million viewers — maintaining an audience, or even growing it, is a rarity in television these days. Award shows like the Oscars, Grammys and Emmys have had seesawing ratings in recent years that are well short of their heights from a decade or two ago.
