Volkswagen AG is reworking the shareholding structure of its Italian brands, which could give the company the option of spinning off its Lamborghini and Ducati brands.

The German car maker's chief executive Herbert Diess said Monday that a final decision hasn't yet been made, but that the company "could act" as a result of the changes, without giving further details.

Chief Finance Officer Frank Witter added that Volkswagen "wouldn't be dismantling the legal structure without having something in mind."

Car body manufacturer Italdesign is another Italian brand owned by Volkswagen.

Volkswagen's management was speaking in a conference call concerning the company's latest five-year planning round.
