Newspaper owner and digital media company Gannett said it has
sued Google and its parent company, alleging anticompetitive
monopolization of advertising-technology markets and deceptive
commercial practices.
Representatives for Google didn't immediately respond to a
request for comment.
Gannett accused Google and Alphabet of maintaining monopolies
over the tools that publishers and advertisers use to buy and sell
online ad space. Gannett said the lack of competition in the space
"depresses prices and reduces the amount and quality of news
content available to readers."
Gannett said Google's alleged misconduct has harmed news
publishers, particularly local news publishers. Gannett said it is
seeking damages from Google and Alphabet.
