Marconi Introduces Next Generation Lorain(R) LPS Power System Featuring Integrated Power, Distribution, Control and Monitoring in a Unique System Configuration ATLANTA AND CLEVELAND, March 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Marconi Corporation plc (LONDON: MONI) today announced its next generation Lorain(R) Power System (LPS) that efficiently combines power distribution, control and monitoring requirements into an expandable, single- frame design, to enhance deployment, increase capacity and reduce floor space consumption by as much as 40% over conventional DC Power Plant architectures. The LPS is being showcased this week at Marconi's booth (#4721) at the CTIA Wireless 2004 Show in Atlanta. Developed with a small footprint to optimize deployment in space-limited switch sites and cell sites, this unique Lorain Power platform offers a revolutionary answer to integrated DC powering requirements for wireless and wireline networks. Plug-and-play power unit versatility is enhanced by the fact that only one person is required to lift any component of the system, including rectifiers. Like other Marconi power products, the system is NEBS Level 3 compliant and compatible with TCP/IP, SNMP, Ethernet, modem and RS232 protocols. With a nearly 70-year heritage of power solutions, Marconi experts developed an innovative system approach to DC network power that optimizes cabling, rectifier design, heat dissipation, and ease of expansion, with enhanced safety considerations, improved energy efficiency and cost effectiveness not yet seen in the industry. The basic LPS plant operates with 200 amp Power Conversion Units (PCUs) powered from 480 VAC. Each bay provides power conversion and distribution -- up to ten PCUs (2,000 amps total) along with 2,400 amps of distribution. Adding additional bays creates larger plants that scale to 10,000 amps in total. "The LPS represents the culmination of smart engineering and dedicated investment, blended with detailed customer inputs," said Dave Smith, executive vice president of Marconi's Outside Plant, Power & Services business. "It reflects a mix of intuitive design and application know-how that has made the Lorain brand name the power industry leader. We believe it establishes a new benchmark against which other power products will now be judged." Marconi's LPS offering simplifies power engineering requirements, reduces the complexity of system configuration and further optimizes actual deployment. An integrated DC bus eliminates costly overhead busses and eases plant expansion. In addition, all bus work is internal to the unit and all connections are external, making for less cable to run, while enhancing safety by eliminating the need for technicians to physically enter the cabinet to make connections. The economic advantage of easier installation, fewer total components, less cable to wire and quicker wiring of connections allows Marconi to reduce the installed cost per amp to approximately 5% less than other current designs. Built-in, leading-edge power system monitoring functionality, through the fully-integrated LMS1000 remote power monitoring system, and added LPS rectifier intelligence allow network providers to better understand power performance in real time. They can also adapt system parameters for faster response to minimize downtime and maximize overall system flexibility, while tracking, storing and reporting the complete details of the power system, including battery performance. This capability enhances regular maintenance programs, helps track key performance parameters and ensures the smooth, consistent delivery of power. Modular, patented distribution design includes built-in automatic monitoring for all distribution devices.
