SGI Supports F-16 Mission Training Center Night Vision Goggle
Simulation Capability MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 1
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Silicon Graphics (NYSE:SGI) has
integrated the prototype night vision goggle (NVG) simulation image
generation hardware on the Lockheed Martin F-16 Mission Training
Center (MTC) program for the U.S. Air Force. The NVG installation
was completed as part of the $3.6 million production phase contract
awarded to SGI last year by Lockheed Martin. Lockheed Martin's F-16
MTC pilot training systems provide realistic immersive training to
the U.S. Air Force in high-resolution virtual training
environments. SGI helped develop and build this prototype NVG
simulation system in conjunction with Lockheed Martin, run-time
software partner MultiGen-Paradigm, Inc., and the Air Force
Research Laboratory in Mesa, Ariz. The simulated NVG capability
produces imagery on a helmet-mounted display that accurately
replicates what an F-16 pilot sees when using night vision goggles
in flight during operational combat. The F-16 MTCs are powered by
the SGI(R) Onyx(R) family of visualization systems which function
as image generators to realistically train pilots in multi-role
functions and scenarios that are in parallel with the F-16 fighter
aircraft's performance in combat missions. SGI's visual image
generators provide the out-the-window display capability to truly
immerse the pilot in a training environment. The F-16 MTC supports
air-to-air and air-to-ground scenarios in a 360-degree environment.
A high-fidelity geo-specific database offers real visual cues
instead of low-resolution, polygonal shapes. F-16 simulators
include briefing/debriefing systems, threat stations, a weapons
controller system and a mission observation center where the
training mission can be watched as it takes place. In addition, the
threat environments of these F-16 pilot training systems contain
more than 100 aircraft and 80 surface entities, all with real world
performance characteristics. SILICON GRAPHICS | The Source of
