Nationwide Contest in Collaboration with Scholastic, Asks Kids
"What Makes Your House a Home?" PARSIPPANY, N.J., Sept. 21
/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation
is pleased to announce the launch of the second annual "My Home:
The American Dream" contest in a collaboration with Scholastic, the
global children's publishing, education and media company. In the
first year of the contest, Coldwell Banker(R) received more than
1,000 entries from 21 states. Developed by Scholastic and Coldwell
Banker, the "My Home: The American Dream" contest asks students in
grades K-8 to explain, through images or words, how they make where
they live -- houses, apartments, condominiums or other living
spaces -- homes. Kids who enter may choose to focus on one of the
following subject cues: "How does your home fit into your version
of the American Dream?" "What is your family's heritage, and how do
you celebrate it?" "What have your parents, grandparents and other
family members taught you about the meaning of home?" Entries may
be submitted in the form of a short film on DVD or VHS; a
storyboard, comic book or series of photographs with text; or an
essay accompanied by illustrations. This fall 20,000 teachers
nationwide will receive a Scholastic "InSchool" program that
includes a poster teaching guide with classroom activities and
information about the contest. In addition, the contest will be
promoted through advertisements in Instructor(R) and Scholastic New
Teacher(TM) magazines. "Last year's entries demonstrated that,
without a doubt, children understand that the support and
encouragement of a family unit is what makes every house or
apartment a home," says Jim Gillespie, president and chief
executive officer, Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation. "From
short films to stained glass windows, dioramas to simple essays,
the children were exceptionally creative in explaining to us what
is special about their homes." "This year, we are hoping to inspire
children to think even more broadly and consider what is special
about their homes in the context of family heritage, family
achievements and how the involvement of the extended family
contributes to make a living space a home," Gillespie adds. Three
grand prize-winning students will receive $2,000 cash prizes
awarded for excellence in creativity and innovation. Fifty
finalists will be awarded $100 prizes. Teachers of the grand
prize-winning students each will receive a new digital video camera
for their classrooms. All entries must be postmarked by Dec. 1,
2006. "The entries we received in the first year of the contest
showed exceptional creativity, critical thinking and emotional
depth," says Michele Robinson, group publisher, Scholastic
Professional Magazines. "The contest provides educators with an
excellent opportunity to help students demonstrate the emotional
connection between house / apartment / condominium and home. We
cannot wait to see this year's submissions." NO PURCHASE NECESSARY.
