Strategic Alliance Links Chorion and Five
Chorion PLC (LSE: COR) and UK television network Five have formed a strategic
alliance to develop, co-produce and broadcast television programming based on
the classic works of best-selling children's author Enid Blyton. Chorion PLC
owns and manages the rights to Enid Blyton's literary works.
Under the terms of the deal, Five will have first rights to participate in the
production of any new television programmes emerging from the Enid Blyton
catalogue in the next three years.
Five, Britain's fastest-growing terrestrial television channel, would co-finance
the programmes and would be in line to participate in associated retail activity
based on the properties.
Today's agreement builds substantially on the current relationship between the
broadcaster and the brand creation and management business.
The hit pre-school series Make Way for Noddy has been a cornerstone of Five's
early morning Milkshake programming bloc since September 2002 and has
re-established the little boy with the tinkling hat, created by Enid Blyton in
1949, as a must-have property.
Make Way for Noddy is the highest rated show for pre-school children in the UK,
attracting nearly three times as many viewers aged three to five as newer
characters such as Bob the Builder, Teletubbies and Tweenies.(1) Make Way for
Noddy also wins a 20 per cent audience share among 4 to 9-year-olds. The first
video/DVD based on the series topped the pre-school Christmas video chart in
2002.
Five's Controller of Children's Programming, Nick Wilson, said:
"Today's announcement firmly establishes Five as the home of Enid Blyton on
television. Make Way for Noddy has been a tremendous hit for us. In partnership
with Chorion, we look forward to introducing younger viewers to Enid Blyton's
other classic characters."
Chorion PLC Chief Executive Nicholas James said:
"Five has been instrumental in introducing a whole new generation of children to
Toyland's favourite taxi driver. The success of Make Way for Noddy illustrates
the enduring nature of Enid Blyton's fiction and demonstrates our long-held
belief that television audiences are eager to welcome the author's other magical
characters into their homes."
