                Merger of British Steel plc ("British Steel") and 
 Koninklijke Hoogovens N.V ("Hoogovens") to create Corus Group plc ("Corus")

HIGH COURT APPROVAL

British Steel and Hoogovens announce that, at today's High Court hearing of
the petition to sanction the Scheme of Arrangement to effect the Merger, the
High Court approved the petition and granted an order sanctioning the Scheme.

It is expected that the Merger will become effective on Wednesday, 6 October
1999 and that dealings in the new Corus shares will commence on the London
Stock Exchange at 8.00am on that day.

Dealings in British Steel ordinary shares on the London Stock Exchange are
therefore expected to cease at the close of business on Tuesday, 5 October
1999.  The Scheme Record Time will be 6.00pm on Tuesday, 5 October 1999.
