Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) and Lightwave, a unit of business-to-business media and information company PennWell Corporation, today announced the winner of the seventh annual FTTXcellence Award. Chuck Hartlen of Bell Aliant in Atlantic Canada, is the recipient of the award, which honors individuals for their contributions to optical access network deployment in North America.

Understanding that Bell Aliant required a major access network improvement to deliver bandwidth for future growth, Hartlen, senior vice-president of customer experience, led the team. He shared his passion and was key in creating the drive to make Bell Aliant the first company in Canada to cover an entire city with fiber to the home (FTTH).

Hartlen’s passion for FTTH is contagious and he never misses an opportunity to educate others. His continued leadership in the areas of deployment, collaboration, and the customer experience has been instrumental in creating Bell Aliant’s FTTH network, FibreOP™. By the end of 2012, Bell Aliant’s goal is to have FibreOP deployed to over 600,000 homes and businesses.

The nomination committee selected Hartlen from a pool of highly qualified candidates across several industry segments, all of whom were nominated by their peers. The award was presented Sept. 15 during a ceremony at the 2010 FTTH Conference & Expo in Las Vegas. At the ceremony, a donation was made in Hartlen’s name to One Economy Corporation, a global non-profit organization that leverages 21st-century technology to help low-income families build assets and raise their standard of living.

“Chuck Hartlen is a passionate advocate for the benefits that FTTx provides to homeowners and businesses. His passion extends to ensuring that his customers have the best possible experience from installation to service and beyond,” said Clark Kinlin, president and CEO of Corning Cable Systems. “Along with his peers, we congratulate Mr. Hartlen on this honor.”

"FTTx technology promises to provide a wealth of new, high-speed services to homes and businesses across North America," said Stephen Hardy, editorial director and associate publisher of Lightwave. "We at Lightwave are pleased to join Corning in recognizing Chuck Hartlen, who has been a leader in bringing these benefits to consumers and other end users."

“It’s a tremendous honor for everyone at Bell Aliant. Under the leadership of our CEO, this has been a collaborative process, bringing together the entire organization to provide the best in advanced technology and innovation, all with our customers at the heart of what we do,” said Chuck Hartlen, senior vice president, customer experience, Bell Aliant.
