É POUCO EM RELAÇÃO AO VALOR QUE CHEGOU, MAS, BASTANTE RAZOÁVEL, SE CONSIDERAR O INÍCIO DO PROCESSO DE VALORIZAÇÃO DO PAPEL.
BONS GANHOS A TODOS

523 05/01/2009The technology Ecodiesel uses has been developed by the company’s founder and engineer Gary Brockett.
Commercial quantities of New Zealand-produced biodiesel will be running through the veins of diesel powered vehicles later next year.
Ecodiesel Ltd, NZ's first major commercial biofuel producer, has attracted strong support from agribusiness investors.
The Auckland based company is successfully leading the charge in converting purified NZ tallow or animal fat, a byproduct of meat processing, into the precious liquid "green fuel"- biodiesel.
The technology Ecodiesel uses has been developed by the company's founder and engineer Gary Brockett
Wholly NZ-owned, Ecodiesel has secured equity capital from a small group of high net worth individuals involved in NZ agribusiness. The next step is to establish this country's first commercial scale biodiesel production facility.
To be located in Manakau, the plant will have the capacity to supply the Government's biofuel obligation of a major oil company, with initial production of 20 million litres of biodesiel, 2008-2009. Annual production capacity is expected to increase to 40 million litres by the end of 2009.
Ecodiesel commercial director Dr Neil Domigan says the capital investment to build the first stage of new commercial plant is about $5 million.
Modular in design, the plant can quickly be scaled up further. Domigan says an additional $3m will be invested in the second year of the operation to increase production capacity to 40m litres.
While the current focus is commissioning its Auckland site, the company intends to also establish a plant in the South Island. It is also eyeing up offshore opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region.
Ecodiesel's production of biodiesel will support the recent introduction by Government of the Biofuel Bill. Though yet to be passed, the proposed legislation requires oil companies to blend a percentage of biofuels with the conventional fossil fuels available at the pump.
Coming into effect in April 2008, the biofuels' sales obligations require oil companies' annual fuel sales to contain 3.4% biofuel by 2012. Companies failing to do so will be liable for financial penalties. They will have the choice of either paying the penalty to the Government or paying a premium for biofuel. It will cost less to buy the biofuel, and offer consumers a blended product than pay the penalty.
Studies by the Institute of Resource Efficient and Sustainable System, of Graz, Austria, show that biodiesel made from tallow gives the lowest environmental footprint or Sustainable Process Index of any biodiesel.
Ecodiesel's environmental soundness also meets the Green Party's amendment to the Biofuel Bill. This amendment, through the introduction of a sustainability standard, requires biofuels to demonstrate that they do not impact on NZ's food supply or environment.
Soon to be scaled up, Ecodiesel's conversion process is well proven. Its current Otahuhu research facility and demonstration plant is already producing commercial quantities of biodiesel.
During the past six months, two 15,000L production runs have been completed successfully.
The proven conversion process will form the blueprint in a commercial plant to be sited in South Auckland close to the Wiri tank farm. Site selection is being finalised and the plant is on target to begin construction within a couple of months. Production is scheduled to begin later in 2008.
Ecodiesel's patented conversion process has a plant capital cost, or start up cost, that is up to 75% less than the $50m-$70m publicly released capital costs of other biodiesel plants planned in NZ.
The process has a number of competitive advantages, including the requirement for less heat and efficient byproduct recovery compared to other plants of similar scale. This translates into reduced operating costs. Ecodiesel's production of biodiesel is cost competitive and environmentally sustainable, especially when stacked up against biofuels derived from crops such as oil seed rape, soy bean and sunflower.
Having secured the required capital, Domigan says the commercial scale operation is a natural progression for the company and follows seven years of research and development.
"It's great to be able to provide NZ consumers with a cost competitive and sustainable biodiesel that will be produced from local by-products."
Domigan says there are 39 processing plants in NZ producing tallow.
To date Ecodiesel has sourced its tallow on the spot market. However it is nearing the end of negotiations to secure the supplies it requires under a long-term supply agreement.
The price of NZ's yearly production of 150,000t of tallow, 80% of which is exported is primarily set by monthly auction trades.
During the first year's production, Domigan says 20,000t of tallow will be required. This will rise to 40,000t in the second year when fuel production will be ramped up to 40m litres.
Managed by its in-house team of internationally renowned chemical engineers and biotechnology specialists, Ecodiesel is also supported by URS. With 30,000 employees globally, URS is one of the world's largest engineering, environmental management and planning companies with a wealth of experience in developing biofuel facilities.
A by-product of the meat industry, NZ produces about 130,000t of tallow annually surplus to domestic requirements. Domestic uses include the manufacture of stock feeds, hard soaps and margarine. This surplus tallow is currently exported offshore but Ecodiesel will now convert it to biodiesel for use in within NZ.
Domigan says this volume of tallow is sufficient feedstock to produce about 127m litres of biodiesel.
Able to be used in a diesel engine without modification, biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, non toxic. It typically has less than 15ppm sulphur and is free of other compounds which cause environmental damage.
Biodiesel reduces nearly all forms of air pollution compared to petrodiesel, in particular sulphur, carbon monoxide and particulate contaminant emissions.
In addition to being a NZ-produced, renewable alternative fuel for diesel engines, Domigan says biodiesel has a number of positive performance attributes including increased cetane, high fuel lubricity and high oxygen rating. These characteristics make it an excellent blending stock with fossil-derived diesel. In addition biodiesel has a solvent effect and usage reduces deposits in diesel engines.
Fuels such as biodiesel that have a higher cetane rating have a shorter ignition delay which provides more time for the fuel combustion process to be complete with the result they operate more effectively with higher cetane number fuels.
