Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday unveiled plans to open its first fulfillment center, as well as a delivery station, in Forney, Texas, about 20 miles east of Dallas.

The Seattle e-commerce giant said the one million-square-foot fulfillment center will launch next year, creating more than 500 full-time jobs.

Amazon, which pays a minimum starting wage of $15 an hour, said employees at the Forney site will pack and ship bulky or larger-sized items such as patio furniture, outdoor equipment and rugs.

Amazon said it also plans to open a new 200,000-square-foot delivery station in Forney later this year that will create more than 100 full- and part-time jobs. Such stations serve the so-called "last mile" of Amazon's order delivery process.
