Goldman Sachs Group Inc. has named Kimberley D. Harris as an independent director of its board, effective Monday.

Ms. Harris is an executive vice president of Comcast Corp. and the general counsel of NBCUniversal. Prior to holding those roles, she was a partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP. She has also served in the U.S. Justice Department and the White House Counsel's Office.

As part of the board, she will serve on Goldman's governance, compensation and public responsibilities committees, the company said.

"Kim will further enhance the diversity of skills and experiences represented on our board," said Chief Executive and Chairman David Solomon in prepared remarks. Mr. Solomon noted her experience in the public and private sectors, which makes her "well-positioned to provide advice and insight across a broad spectrum of topics, including governmental, regulatory and public policy matters," he said.
