International stocks trading in New York closed higher on Thursday.

The S&P/BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged up 0.5% to 152.86. The European index ticked up 0.7% to 150.34. The Asian index moved up 0.4% to 173.82. The Latin American index edged down 0.5% to 183.29, while the emerging-markets index climbed 0.7% to 290.78.

British American Tobacco PLC was among those whose ADRs traded actively.

The tobacco company rose 0.7% on news that its subsidiary is contributing $10 million as the initial investor to a joint venture formed by Charlotte's Web Holdings Inc. with AJNA BioSciences PBC and the British American Tobacco subsidiary.

Robotic energy-based therapies company Edap TMS SA gained 1.9% following approval from the Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Agency for the commercialization of the ExactVu micro-ultrasound biopsy platform in Japan.
