Hapag-Lloyd said it will continue to avoid Red Sea transits and reroute its vessels around the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa until at least Jan. 9 in response to recent attacks by Houthi militants.

The German shipping company said Tuesday that its crisis committee will reassess the situation next week and decide whether to continue diverting vessels or not.

"Given the incidents in the last days we decided to continue sailing around to Cape of Good Hope, we monitor the situation closely day by day, but will continue to reroute our vessels until January 9th," a company spokesperson said.

The U.S. Navy on Sunday destroyed three boats controlled by Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group in Yemen, after they attacked a containership operated by Danish shipping giant A.P. Moller-Maersk in the Red Sea/

In response, Maersk said it decided to delay all voyages through the area for the following 48 hours.
