Capital Continues to Strengthen National Presence
23 October 2003
Rajar figures released today show Capital Radio continues to strengthen its
national presence whilst holding its position as the number one commercial radio
group in London. Capital Radio Group has more listeners and a greater share of
listening hours than any of its competitors.
Nationally the group's reach is 7.8 million with a 11.9% share in its analogue
TSA. Total listening hours are up to 72 million. These figures have been buoyed
by the national figures for Xfm, which have increased to 634,000.
In London, the group's leading position has been maintained with strong
performances from Xfm, Choice and Capital Gold. During a year of transition for
95.8 Capital FM, the station has continued to attract nearly 2.3 million
listeners. The breakfast show remains the biggest in London with 1.2 million
listeners tuning in, making it the number one choice for Londoners over our BBC
and commercial competitors.
The new management team introduced significant changes to the schedule and
presenter line-up in late September. These changes are not reflected in the
current Rajar results (23 June -14 Sept) but together with the new breakfast
show presented by Johnny Vaughan and more compelling programming, we are
confident that we have the creative solutions in place to win back listeners.
Outside London, Capital Radio continues to see the benefits of its strategy to
grow national brands. The Century FM network has recorded best ever reach of 1.8
million and record share 7.5%, with outstanding results for 105.4 Century FM in
the NW. Across the Capital FM network strong results for Beat 106 and BRMB,
which has increased its share and now has the biggest breakfast show in
Birmingham.
Recording its first national figures, Capital Gold added around 370,000 new
listeners and 2 million listening hours.
Commenting on the figures David Mansfield, Capital Radio Chief Executive said,
"95.8 is going through a transition period which has been reflected in these
results. However, Capital Radio is a national group and I am pleased to see that
within this current Rajar period, there have been some significant successes in
our long-term strategy to increase our national presence. We are encouraged to
see the strengthening of our position outside of London, reducing our reliance
on our flagship station."
