Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today it has signed a patent license agreement with the Whitehead Institute through Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), its licensing agent. Under terms of the agreement, Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research has granted Corning a license for patent rights to Reverse Transfection Method technology for the drug discovery research market. Corning will leverage this newest piece of intellectual property with previously obtained fundamental technology licensed from Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. to enhance the development of its molecular and cell culture applications. This technology enables users to achieve higher throughput and an easier, more efficient method of accomplishing surface-mediated transfection. Corning holds exclusive rights to Aastrom's surface-mediated cell transfection technology used to increase the frequency and efficiency of introducing foreign genes into cells. "We are very pleased to have licensed this important piece of intellectual property from the Whitehead Institute. This move further underscores Corning's commitment to investing in research and development of new products and technologies," said Jeff Mooney, commercial technology director, Corning Life Sciences. "Our expertise in both surfaces and assays, combined with the intellectual property we have acquired from industry leaders such as Whitehead and Aastrom Biosciences, makes us confident we hold the necessary keys to deliver to market a first-of-its-kind technology that will greatly improve our customers' drug discovery research techniques."
