The cumulative average return on the group stands at a gain of 0.471 percent. In Asia, the Japanese Nikkei was almost unchanged, but the major European markets are surging ahead as we move into the afternoon session. The French CAC 40 is up 0.7 percent, in London the FTSE 100 is up 0.8 percent, while the German DAX has added one percent. The March crude contract tumbled 1.53 percent in trading on Tuesday. March unleaded gas gained 0.77% and March natural gas added 0.99%, but heating oil for March delivery gave back 1.51 percent. As usual, the weekly inventory figures are due for release this morning from the U.S. Energy Department, and it often pays to keep an eye on the markets at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. DYNAMIC MARKET OPPORTUNITIES In the third national election since 2000 and second in the last 18 months, Canada's electorate brought an abrupt end to 13 years of Liberal Party rule earlier this week. Following a financing and kickback scandal in Quebec that severely damaged the popularity of Prime Minister Paul Martin, Stephen Harper's Conservatives swept into power. Polls suggested that voters were so disgruntled with the Liberals that the party had one of its lowest voting percentages in history -- which was hardly surprising when you consider how much support Martin lost in Quebec after Liberal Party officials took money in return for lucrative government contracts. While the Liberals based their recent campaigns on a thriving economy, this seems to have been offset by scandals that have risen all the way to the top. The Conservatives based their platform on ridding the government of such ugliness and creating a new regime focused on bringing people together. Specifically, that means the party will attempt to forge closer ties with the US administration. For their part, Liberals believe Harper is an extremist conservative who wants to ban abortion and gay marriage.
