ARLINGTON, Va., April 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Chemical
Educational Foundation (CEF) will present Dr. Stephanie A. Burns,
chairman, president and CEO of Dow Corning Corporation,
headquartered in Midland, MI, with the prestigious Vanguard Award
in a ceremony to be held in Washington, D.C. on April 24. The
Vanguard Award is a prestigious national award recognizing
leadership, community service, and educational outreach on behalf
of the chemical industry. "I am honored and humbled to receive this
wonderful Vanguard Award from the Chemical Education Foundation.
The real recognition goes to the entire company," said Burns. "I
would like to thank my Dow Corning colleagues for their strong
contributions to this award. It is what they do everyday that
represents exemplary civic leadership." For over a decade CEF has
given the prestigious Vanguard Award to an individual whose
leadership, commitment, and outreach efforts have helped advance
the CEF's mission of fostering a greater understanding of
chemistry, the benefits of chemicals, and the importance of
chemical safety awareness. "CEF seeks Vanguard Award nominees who
elevate industry product stewardship awareness and endorse the
benefits and safe handling of chemicals among the public,
government officials, and members of the chemical industry," stated
John Rice, Managing Director of CEF. Under Burns' leadership, Dow
Corning has actively promoted teacher training in chemistry,
sponsored chemistry-related scholarships and internships,
participated in SciFest, an annual American Chemistry Society event
that brings students, family members and educators together to
participate in hands-on science activities, and developed chemical
process training facilities at the community college and vocational
high school levels. With Burns' support, the Dow Corning Foundation
introduced an annual "Teacher Innovation Awards" program in school
districts located near the company's U.S. facilities. The Awards
encourage educators to submit creative teaching projects related to
math and science. In its third year, the program has awarded more
than fifty $1,000 grants to local elementary, middle and high
school teachers. "Dow Corning has sponsored a long list of programs
and partnerships with educators to raise awareness and access to
science in our schools. It is vitally important to the future of
our industry, and to the future of our children," said Burns.
"Still, I am the first one to say we have barely scratched the
surface. We need to do even more as a company, and as a society. We
must invest in the knowledge and potential of the next generation."
Past winners of the Award include Michael Campbell, president, CEO
and chairman of Arch Chemicals; Laura Dornbusch, president of Expo
Chemical Co., Inc.; J. Roger Hirl, president & CEO of
Occidental Chemical Corporation; and Audley C. Harlow, retired
executive of the Canadian Association of Chemical Distributors. Dow
