Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) was awarded the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) prestigious 2009 IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition. The award recognizes the companys sustained, outstanding contributions to optical fiber technology and, in particular, the recent development of its highly flexible fiber, Corning ClearCurve single-mode optical fiber.

Dr. Waguih S. Ishak, division vice president and director of the Corning West Technology Center, received the award on behalf of the company at the IEEE Awards Ceremony on June 25, in Los Angeles.

The IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition is presented for outstanding and exemplary contributions in the field of electro technology by an industrial entity, governmental or academic organization, or other corporate body. Past recipients of the IEEE Corporate Innovation award include: Apple Corporation, Intel Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Texas Instruments, Hewlett Packard, Research in Motion, and Microsoft Corporation.

We are honored to be recognized with IEEEs prominent innovation award, said Martin J. Curran, senior vice president and general manager, Corning Optical Fiber. Nearly 40 years ago, Corning invented the first low-loss optical fiber, which helped launch the communications age. We continued to innovate over the past four decades and provide products and technology that today make up the backbone of telecommunications networks around the globe. Most recently, we introduced a family of revolutionary, ultra-bendable optical fibers, ClearCurve single-mode and multimode fibers, which will help bring fiber closer to the user.

Corning ClearCurve single-mode optical fiber is an ultra-bendable fiber that can be handled like copper cables, but provides the near limitless bandwidth of optical fiber. ClearCurve single-mode fiber is ideal for challenging fiber installation environments, such as apartment buildings and high rises, because it can be bent around tight corners and stapled without losing signal. ClearCurve multimode fiber is the worlds first laser optimized, high-bandwidth ultra-bendable multimode fiber. It can withstand tight bends and challenging cable routes making it ideal for data centers and enterprise networks.
