Corning Supplies Gorilla® Glass for Acer’s Dual-screen ICONIA Tablet
06 Janeiro 2011 - 8:00PM
Business Wire
Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today that Corning®
Gorilla® Glass has been designed into Acer’s ICONIA tablet
computer. The ICONIA creates a distinctive tablet experience –
combining the versatility of a 14-inch form factor with a unique
dual-screen layout and highly intuitive all-point touch
functionality.
The ICONIA’s design incorporates ultra-thin, durable Gorilla
Glass as a cover glass for its dual multi-touch displays, and
includes a full range of intuitive and easy-to-use features
designed to fully utilize the devices’ multi-touch technology.
“Being easy-to-use, reliable and eco-friendly are important
factors that we aim to achieve in Acer’s product design,” said
David Lee, associate vice president of Mobile Computing Business
Unit, Acer Inc. “Corning Gorilla Glass used in Acer’s ICONIA
achieves all of these criteria.”
“We’re pleased that our customers recognize the benefits of
using Gorilla Glass for the growing touch market for IT devices,”
said James R. Steiner, senior vice president, Corning Specialty
Materials. “Gorilla Glass enables high sensitivity and accurate
responses for the most sophisticated touch technology. In addition,
on the glass surface, Corning also provides an easy-to-clean,
wear-resistant coating, which allows for easy smudge removal.”
Continuing a tradition of more than 150 years of innovation in
materials science and technology, Corning Gorilla Glass is an
environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin-sheet glass.
Its exceptional damage resistance helps protect today’s most
sophisticated electronic devices from the scratches, drops, and
bumps of everyday use. Compatible with advanced touch screens,
Gorilla Glass is tough enough to handle the ongoing physical
contact intrinsic to these devices.
Gorilla Glass is currently used by more than 20 major brands,
designed into hundreds of product models, and featured on more than
200 million devices. Gorilla Glass is produced with Corning’s
proprietary fusion-draw process which produces glass with
exceptionally clean, smooth, flat surfaces; outstanding optical
clarity; and inherent dimensional stability. The unique composition
of Gorilla Glass allows for a deep layer of high compressive stress
— created through an ion-exchange process. This process acts as a
sort of “armor,” making the glass exceptionally tough and damage
resistant.
