Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW) and Lightwave recognize Shane
Trotman of Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative (FTC) as the
winner of the Eighth Annual FTTXcellence Award. The award was
presented at the 2011 FTTH Conference & Expo’s closing session
and luncheon in Orlando.
Trotman started his career with FTC in 1990. Well-known for his
hands-on approach, Trotman’s career included extensive experience
deploying fiber products in the field. His commitment and belief in
fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) service capability improvements and
operational savings led his company to consider this option.
In 2010, Trotman became the senior operations supervisor,
overseeing engineering, construction, splicing and a wireless
division. In this short time, FTC expanded into three Competitive
Local Exchange Carrier markets, and construction was completed on
approximately 276 miles of FTTH. Contracts have been approved for
another 101 miles.
In April, Alabama was hit by a deadly outbreak of tornados that
destroyed 38 miles of FTC’s service area. Through careful planning
and training, Trotman led his team to recovery, keeping the goals
set out by FTC’s management within reach.
“Shane is an innovative, field-savvy pioneer with a vision. He
embraced this new technology and persevered to bring
fiber-to-the-home benefits to rural customers,” said Clark Kinlin,
president and chief executive officer for Corning Cable Systems.
“On behalf of everyone at Corning, I congratulate Shane on this
honor.”
"We at Lightwave are pleased to join Corning in recognizing
Shane," said Stephen Hardy, editorial director and associate
publisher of Lightwave. “His central role in FTC’s FTTH rollout and
his leadership in helping FTC to overcome the effects of natural
disasters is emblematic of the customer-centric spirit that is a
common catalyst among FTTH deployments throughout North
America.”
“I am honored to receive this award,” said Shane Trotman, senior
operations and engineering supervisor for Farmers
Telecommunications Cooperative, Inc. “I have come to realize that
it takes a team effort to be able to offer our members the level of
service that we’ve come to expect. The value of a great team of
co-workers, suppliers, contractors, and relations with other Telcos
was made even more clear to FTC as we recently experienced, through
a series of tornados, the greatest disaster that our area had ever
seen. I am blessed to be a part of such a team.”
To be eligible for the award, candidates must be nominated by a
peer. Nominees may include individuals at carriers and system
operators, home developers, utilities, municipalities or other
organizations that have launched a FTTx project; individuals at
vendors or research organizations whose work has benefited FTTx
technology development; politicians or other policymakers who have
made a significant positive impact in the regulatory or legal
arena; and other deserving individuals. This year, Corning and
Lightwave were pleased to welcome Daniel O’Connell, president of
the FTTH Council North America, to the panel of judges who selected
Shane as the 2011 FTTXcellence Award recipient.
In addition to the awards ceremony at the FTTH Conference, Shane
was honored with a donation in his name to One Economy Corporation,
a global, non-profit organization that leverages 21st-century
technology to help low-income families build assets and raise their
standard of living. He also received an award of Steuben glass
crafted by the world-renowned glass artists of the Steuben Glass
studios in Corning, N.Y., and will be profiled in an issue of
Lightwave magazine.
About Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative
As Alabama’s largest member-owned, operating telephone
cooperative, Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative (FTC) serves
close to 17,000 subscribers in seven exchanges across DeKalb and
Jackson counties. And as was the case in 1952, large telecom
companies in Alabama and across rural America are making cost-based
decisions to close local and regional offices, isolating rural and
small-town customers out on the fringe of the national network.
FTC, however, has sought to strengthen — not weaken — its local
connections. And, far from the simple dial tone that those first
members treasured a half-century ago, FTC now offers an impressive
array of advanced telecom services that once might have been
assumed simply not to be available to rural citizens.
