US Geithner: Infrastructure Spending Key To Jobs, US Growth

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner Tuesday used a visit to
a fiber-optics manufacturing plant to urge Congress to pass new
infrastructure spending measures.
"Investments in the power grid, satellites, and the information
infrastructure connecting communities and classrooms to high-speed
Internet all help to keep our economy running at its full
potential," Geithner said in remarks prepared for a visit to
Corning Inc.'s (GLW) fiber-optics manufacturing plant in
Wilmington, N.C.
The Senate earlier this month voted against President Barack
Obama's $447 billion package of spending initiatives and tax cuts.
All Republicans voted against the bill, and two Democrats also
opposed it.
Senate Democrats are now moving forward with Obama's jobs plan
in pieces. Lawmakers are scheduled to take up infrastructure
provisions of the jobs bill next week, though approval is unlikely
due to strong Republican opposition to new spending.
