Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today hosted a grand opening
and groundbreaking ceremony for Corning (Shanghai) Co. Ltd.,
Corning’s wholly owned automotive substrate facility in Shanghai,
China. The event celebrated the completion of a $125 million
expansion and the beginning of a previously announced third
capacity build-out. Members of the Chinese government, customers,
and employees attended the ceremony.
Corning (Shanghai) Co. Ltd. was established in 1999 to provide
advanced emissions control substrate technologies and engineering
services to automotive customers in China and Asia. The facility
began manufacturing ceramic substrates in 2001. The company
completed its first expansion of the plant in 2007 and broke ground
on a second addition, celebrated today, in 2010. The third
expansion is expected to be operational in the third quarter of
2013.
“Today’s celebration is another milestone in Corning’s
longstanding support of China’s economic growth,” said Wendell P.
Weeks, chairman, chief executive officer, and president, Corning
Incorporated. “These expansions underscore the speed at which
China’s auto industry is growing, and they also demonstrate
Corning’s commitment to grow with our customers.”
“China now leads the world in both auto production and vehicle
sales. This market growth, coupled with tighter regulations, will
drive increased demand for Corning’s state-of-the art
emissions-control products,” said Tom Lynch, general manager of
Corning Shanghai Co. Ltd. and regional director of Environmental
Technologies, China and India. “Our investments in this facility
will help us better serve our customers here in the region and
around the world.”
Corning is a leading supplier of advanced catalytic converter
substrates and particulate filters, supplying the world's major
manufacturers of gasoline and diesel engines and vehicles. The
company invented an economical, high-performance cellular ceramic
substrate in the early 1970s that is now the standard for catalytic
converters worldwide. Corning also developed the cellular ceramic
particulate filter in 1978 to remove soot from diesel engine
emissions in 1978.
