MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are looking a bit tattered this morning as just four of the 15 markets that we track are currently in positive territory. The cumulative average return on the group stands at a minus 0.117 percent. The consumer in the United Kingdom seems to be in reasonable shape as September retail sales in the country rose by 1.0 percent, eclipsing estimates for a more modest 0.2 percent rise. Versus the September 2003 period, retail sales were 6.9 percent higher on expectations for a 5.9 percent rise. On London's International Petroleum Exchange (IPE) the December future contract on Brent North Sea oil hit an all-time high of $51.05 earlier this morning. We start out this morning with Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending October 16. Analysts expect to see this figure decline by 7,000 coming on the heels of the prior week's surprise 15,000 jump. At 10:00 a.m., the September version of the Conference Board Leading Economic Indicators is expected to have slowed its rate of decline with 0.2 percent shrinkage over the prior month that was booked at a 0.3 percent decline to a reading of 115.7. For the record, the index was equal to 100 in 1996. This index, which seeks to describe the economy's future direction, took another turn lower in August amid concerns over the state of the consumer sector. The report noted that only three out of the 10 indicators making up the overall index rose in August, led by manufacturers' new orders for consumer goods and materials, the money supply and weekly unemployment insurance claims. The negatives were driven by interest rate spreads, building permits and consumer confidence levels. At noon, the October Philadelphia Fed Business Index is expected to have rebounded to plus 18.5 versus the prior month's plus 13.4 posting. That may not be saying very much as the September reading was the lowest since July 2003. Any reading in the index greater than zero indicates increased activity in the index or its components. On Wednesday, XM Satellite Radio and Major League Baseball announced a $650 million deal that will see XM air baseball games over the next 11 years. An agreement like this with "America's Past-time" can only help enhance the growing popularity and pervasiveness of satellite radio companies like XM and its major rival, Sirius, which recently inked a deal to broadcast NFL games. XM currently has 2.5 million subscribers, while Sirius has 700,000. With 130 digital radio channels already available on XM Radio for just $9.95 per month, satellite radio is fast appearing in many different places -- homes, an additional extra in cars (including rentals) and even on some airlines like JetBlue. Look for both to extend their success -- a factor that will likely be reflected in their share prices. Elsewhere, stem cells stocks continue their bullish run, feeding from the intense pre-election debate over stem cell research. On Wednesday, they received a further boost with the news that California Governor Schwarzenegger broke with his Republican party and endorsed a US$3 billion bond that could fund human embryonic stem cell research. This will put the Governor in a tough position against the state's Republican party, which opposed Proposition 71, and the Bush Administration, which has limited federal funding for stem cell research. Should this be passed, it could give researchers in California about US$300 million a year for 10 years.
