CORNING, N.Y., January 7,
2014 - Corning Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) today
announced that Corning®
Gorilla® Glass has
been chosen by Pebble as the cover glass for the newly launched
Pebble Steel smartwatch.
Corning Gorilla Glass, well-known for providing
durability and scratch resistance in smartphone, slate and laptop
applications, is now bringing those features to the smartwatch
category. Compared with sapphire crystal, Corning Gorilla Glass is
lighter weight, requires significantly less energy to produce, and
transmits more light for better optical clarity.
"Pebble delivers a differentiated experience built
around use in real life," said Eric Migicovsky, founder and chief
executive officer of Pebble, "We designed our new watch with
Corning Gorilla Glass because it helps us deliver on this promise.
Gorilla Glass provides the ideal combination of durability,
aesthetic appeal and optical clarity for this application."
"Corning is pleased to work with Pebble to deliver
the benefits of Gorilla Glass to the Pebble Steel smartwatch," said
James R. Steiner, senior vice president and general manager,
Corning Specialty Materials, "We look forward to continued
collaboration with Pebble to deliver the latest in cover glass
innovation to their innovative consumer products."
The Pebble Steel is now available for pre-order
from getpebble.com.
Corning will display the new Pebble Steel in booth
#11612 located in Central Hall at the 2014 International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES).
