MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets are primarily positive as 14 of the 15 markets that we track are holding above their respective flat-line numbers. The Nikkei and the Hang Seng represent two opposing points of view with the latter heading up the advancing exchanges while the former represents the lone voice of negative dissention. The cumulative average return on the group stands at a plus 0.988 percent. A relatively lackluster economic and earnings calendar today may give investors a chance to digest data of the past two weeks. At 10:00 a.m., December Wholesale Trade is expected to have risen by 0.3 percent versus the 0.5 percent rise of November; old data, which should go unnoticed by the market. At 11:00 a.m., a more current piece of data on the well-being of one of the Federal Reserve districts in the form of the January Kansas City Fed Manufacturing Index. In December the area maintained a posture of growth, posting a plus 1.0 reading. Whenever a federal official speaks, there is always the potential for a market moving comment to come out either by intent or accident. We get two opportunities for a little volatility today. First, at 11:00 a.m., Treasury Secretary Snow speaks on Cuban sanctions in Miami. At 12:30 p.m., Chicago Fed President Moskow speaks in Detroit.
