Coca-Cola Canada Bottling Ltd. said it is buying six Volvo VNR Electric trucks to become the first food and beverage manufacturer in Canada to use electric trucks and help the soft drink company reduce its direct carbon emissions.

Volvo Trucks North America is selling the electric trucks as part of a pilot program to service Coca-Cola's delivery routes through the greater Montreal area. The six trucks will be the first Class 8 battery-electric trucks in the beverage distributor's fleet of 650 heavy-duty vehicles.

All the Volvo VNR Electric trucks will be delivered throughout 2023, the truck maker said.

The battery-electric fleet features a six-battery configuration that can cover up to 275 miles on a single charge, as the trucks make several daily round trips of 93 miles from a distribution center in Montreal, the companies said. Coke Canada Bottling said it is installing three 150 kW chargers with nine dispensers at the distribution center, which is expected to be complete in June.
