a subsidiary of TXU Corp., in conjunction with Tyler Junior College
(TJC) and the Tyler Economic Development Council (TEDC), announced
today the formation of the Luminant Academy at Tyler Junior
College. The Luminant Academy's state-of-the-art training facility
will provide technical, leadership and management training to
Luminant power generation, mining and construction teams. "Luminant
places great importance on a high-performance company culture,"
said Steve Kopenitz, senior vice president of technical services
and operational readiness for Luminant. "This partnership will
further improve our current employees' skills and capabilities,
while helping to recruit and train the next generation of Luminant
employees. Our vision is that together, our current high-performing
employees and new staff that we add will set the industry standard
in operational excellence. In addition, current employees will be
able to use the Luminant Academy to develop technical and
leadership skills that will provide individual career-development

will earn continuing education hours for the courses and

constructing a two-story, 24,000-square foot training facility. In
addition to classrooms and training labs, Luminant will install
high-fidelity boiler simulators that imitate the actual operation
of Luminant power plants. Luminant is investing $1.7 million in the
Academy, which is expected to be staffed with 10 employees and use
outside trainers and instructors. Their subject matter will include
the Luminant Operating System, a "lean" manufacturing practice that
focuses on efficiency and attacking and minimizing waste. Luminant
is the first company in the energy sector to fully and effectively
implement such practices. "We are happy to announce this
partnership with Luminant today," said TJC President Dr. William R.
Crowe. "The Luminant Academy is another example of our institution
working with businesses and industries to create partnerships that
effectively and cost-efficiently train employees to deliver
services that improve the productivity of businesses and the
quality of the lives of people in our region. "At Tyler Junior
College, we are committed to Three Promises: a quality education; a
vibrant student life; and community service. This agreement will
deliver quality instruction to students who desire to pursue new
and exciting careers in the electric generation industry, and it
certainly is an expression of our commitment to serving the
community." "The establishment of the Luminant Academy will support
Luminant's continued efforts to employ local Tyler residents," said
Tom Mullins, TEDC president and CEO. "This unique partnership will
prepare individuals for successful careers with Luminant." Luminant
is working with TJC during construction to ensure the building can
achieve a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)
Green Building Rating System(TM) certification level from the U.S.
Green Building Council. Luminant is a major contributor to the
